Dr. Praveen Kumar is a Research Faculty member and Manager of the Advanced Electron Microscopy Laboratory at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, USA. He earned his master’s degree in Solid State Materials from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, in 2013, and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Tübingen, Germany, in 2018. His doctoral research focused on understanding the losses in silicon solar cells using advanced electron microscopy techniques. Following his Ph.D., he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at CEA Grenoble, France, from 2018 to 2020, where he utilized aberration-corrected microscopy to study the structural characterization and aging mechanisms of silicon-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries as part of the European Horizon 2020 Sintbat Project. From 2020 to 2022, he was a research fellow at Queen’s University Belfast, UK, under the US-Ireland Research Program, where he specialized in the characterization of III-V quantum droplets for quantum computing applications using advanced electron microscopy. He also contributed to projects involving in-situ TEM development for catalysis, nanofluids, and solar thermal applications.
Dr. Kumar has been involved in several high-impact research projects, including studies on Si/graphite composite anodes for lithium-ion batteries, high-efficiency silicon solar cells, thermoelectric materials, PbSe photoconductive thin films, ferroelectrics, and fuel cells. He has collaborated with both industrial and academic partners on these projects. His research interests lie in the structure-property relationships of advanced energy materials, using advanced electron microscopy techniques such as S/TEM, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). In addition to his research, Dr. Kumar is an active peer reviewer for renowned journals such as Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, Advanced Functional Materials, Inorganic Chemistry, and many others. He has also served as a guest editor for various journals, has over 45 peer-reviewed publications, holds one issued patent, and has delivered 10 invited talks.
At SCIATLAS, Dr. Praveen Kumar currently contributes as a potential author and serves as an editor specializing in the fields of Materials Engineering and Solid State Physics.
